Check-a-thon: Fun for the whole WGA community!

Updated: Sep 29, 2023

Check-a-thon isn’t just a fundraising experience. It’s an opportunity to participate in activities as a family and/or part of the larger WGA community. Read below to learn how you can get in on some of the fun!

When it comes to decor, we kinda go big!

If you’re a returning family to WGA, you already know that our Check-a-thon committee dedicates a lot of creative energy towards the annual theme. Every year families and volunteers work together to transform the campus with awesome DIY “family builds” (decor) to generate school-wide excitement.

And this year’s “Super Mario World” theme is no exception! Whether you are familiar with Super Marios or not, a simple Google search will easily inspire some ideas!

FUN FACT: We are also screening the “Super Mario World” movie during family night on 10/20/2023 to get you in the Mario-spirit!

What are “family-builds”?

Transforming the WGA campus into a world inhabited by Mario, Luigi and their unique friends is a huge task. “Family-builds” are a way families can work together at home (with your kids or in collaboration with other WGA families) to design and build various decorative elements to add to our real-life Super Mario World on campus.

The criteria for family builds:

  • Must be on theme of all-things Super Mario World

  • Must be at least 3-feet tall

  • Must use 50% upcycled materials

  • Must be free-standing or ready-to-hang ceiling or wall decorations

All family-builds to be delivered to campus to the outdoor amphitheater between October 18-20th.

It takes a community to transform the campus!

In addition to family builds, there are also community builds. These are team projects to help design and create some of our bigger structures.

This year we'd love your help turning the three main courtyards into various Mario kingdoms! Ideas can include kingdom-specific palaces or castles, pipes, collection blocks, power-ups, stars, characters, interactive features, background designs, etc.

  • Bowser's Kingdom (Central Courtyard)

  • Mushroom Kingdom (Primary Courtyard)

  • Snow Kingdom (Secondary Courtyard)

  • Pipe Land (6th grade portables)

We are looking for 1 lead volunteer (or 2 co-leads) per kingdom to head-up the design, creation and installation of their kingdom.

  • Teams will have up to $125 budget for materials and supplies (must submit reimbursement receipts). However, we encourage the use of up-cycled materials.

  • Decorations must leave walkways and doorways clear.

  • Must be secured or weighed down in case of wind.

  • PTO volunteer coordinator will help secure additional volunteers

  • Space will be available on campus to work and/or store projects

  • Kingdom set-up on campus courtyards will be Sunday 10/22

Whether you want to lead or assist, go to the Check-a-thon Volunteer section to signup to help in your desired kingdom.
